I think that there is a connection between soul and quality of life. If you are living a soulful life, with soul integrated into your being in such away that makes it central to your consciousness, your quality of life will be such that you are living your highest potential and in harmony with everything and all that is. Chances are this would put you at the other end of the spectrum of life than mere survival, which may have been implied in you metaphor of scrounging through garbage.
