I feel the not allowing oneself to succeed deeply Gruff. One could
take a deeply introspective line here - I think we all know that in
our differing ways. I am deeply saddened by what gets promoted as
success - it's usually some kind of covered-up failure. Our really
utterly crap neighbours have now been evicted - she faces a trial for
attempted arson at the end of May. He continues with methadone, tins
of strong cider and attempts to pretend dignity amongst drugs and
petty crime. Their kids are sucked in. It would be instructive to
get into the inside of this failure and the failure of relevant
authorities to understand it and offer some other kind of dignity.
These people are living on benefits from a system they never
contribute to, just as people are finding that their 40 year pensions
are worth a quarter of what they were led to expect. They are
stealing from shops, often with some insider who puts the goods out
with the rubbish for them to fence. I see no one coming forward with
any real plan - the solution is to have enough money to live away from
all this, perhaps by working in the system that doesn't help these
people or their victims. Part of my plan was to bring attention to
the inside voice of such people - ironically denied because we became
victims of a particularly mad, bad and sad couple and the system which
just cannot cope - perhaps because justice has nothing to do with the
bloated salaries of those in the legal system. I suspect that
'success' is taught to us as being about seizing the main chance,
either in promoting the lying bullshit required by politicians'
targets or fencing stolen supermarket food. The bureaucrats, perhaps
as usual, may be worse than the thieves.
There's always a danger in becoming a martyr in autobiography and
suckering oneself into false enlightenment - one might say Henry
George is an example writ large in this area, or think of the killer
sect that has made itself holy enough to kill everyone else.. Even
autobiography requires articulation and skills many do not have, but
it's at least some kind of start in a wider voicing. As Vam points
out, the language-games go well beyond anything we write, though there
remain questions about how we can make more present.
