I think it is a barbaric way of thinking rooted in the days of old.
Reminds me of China's history of beheading criminal and displaying the
heads for public view, which served as a warning sign.

Of course, given the choice, I would rather have my head chopped off
than to lose my right hand and left foot to a machete chop.

We in a sense care for our criminals and try to nurture them back to
society with a rehabilitation process.  I don't know that it works but
for sure beheading rids the society of the worry.  Chopping off limbs
I think just exacerbates the situation, now there are criminals that
can't function normally in society even if they were rehabilitated.

I don't know to what degree religion plays in this.  I think these
people would conduct themselves in the same way regardless and are
just using religion as an excuse or a justification.
