Yes I remember you sharing that experience a while back and I'm always
reminded of the time I stayed in a beach front cottage on the south
shore of eastern Long Island. It was early spring, I woke up early,
stepped out onto the beach and saw the Atlantic as never before.
Placid and still like a sheet of glass, without a ripple, without
sound. There was an eeriness about it and I turned to look back at the
cottage to see if I was actually there and not dreaming. I tossed a
small stone into the water to see if it was real and as you say the
ripple slowly traveled away towards the horizon. I didn't want to
leave but I went into town for breakfast and when I returned it was as
always, the constant churning of the ocean, the curling of the waves
crashing on the beach grinding the pebbles into sand. Perhaps my
little stone woke up the ocean which slept for that brief moment in
time.
To answer my own post I would say that I have never really done
anything that influenced the world but only the world around me, my
immediate world and the people within it.
Some people write books, poetry, plays and such that do influence the
world, others belong to groups or organizations that influence the
world and so my post is simply an inquiry and not to be construed as a
judgment or a criticism of anyone who hasn't done anything. I guess
we can think of the butterfly effect if we must to say that anything
that is done influences the world but that is not what I was getting
at.
