Welcome aboard and thanks for distinguishing individualism from the
good for all philosophy. I would think that being an individualist is
ultimately the better ideal but there must be some levels where the
collective must take precedence. Considering that we all eat, food
therefore should be grown, harvested and distributed according to the
needs of the entire group and individualism from that point can
determine what one chooses to eat or not eat, one example of course.
I'm sure we can tack on housing and other collective needs that, as it
stands now, is far from being available to all, ergo, the homeless,
poverty and hunger problems. I'm sure that Madoff is quite the
individualist and I hope he's enjoying his individual jail cell.
Control seems to be a necessary function in life, everyone can't be
captain of the ship. Even after a mutiny someone simply replaces the
former controlling entity. Without control there is chaos, in fact we
actually need control in order to have individualism. We have to
control those who seek to enslave others. The problem is setting up
the parameters, where the control begins and ends. This is for sure,
as you say, where we must hope that those in control, those setting
the parameters, have wisdom, fair and sound judgment.
