Thanks for the brief history on tariffs. I do recall they were very
prevalent during the Civil War era. And I think I can make a good
guess as to why they all but disappeared after WWII ... part of
getting ready for the move in ' '71 to cut the economy loose from
gold. If we were going to really let free-market capitalism cut loose
by making the currency fiat there was little sense in holding on to
tariffs which only choke competition and trade.

Sounds like you enjoy your life as regimented as it appears to be, but
to each his own on that. No one can judge another's style other than
to say it's not for me. But I bet you run int that sort of prejudice
quite often, especially right now when conservatives are not viewed as
having much common sense.

But if you hobnob with the less monied crowds I'd say you run into
social prejudice there quite a bit too (if they know your monied, that
is.) I've known monied people. Quite a few more than my own
socioeconomic position would normally encounter, thanks to my career
in law. But it's that career that colors my perception. All the
wealth I ran into was in trouble with the law -- civil, criminal,
domestic, financial or taxes -- usually through their own fault so
they were not a true random sampling, but the majority of them were
assholes: Arrogant, narrow-minded, bigoted, mean-streaked, cruel
assholes who showed little regard for others in their pursuit of
money.

There are monied people who are good and are concerned about society
and individuals, but they are generally unsung and few know of their
eleemosynorial practices. The only prominent ones I can think of at
the moment are Warren Buffett and Ted Turner and the McArthur
Foundation. But money is no more a definition of character than is
talent.

Yes, Don, I agree. I've thoroughly enjoyed a lot of things I never
worked for and didn't have to take care of, both of which were part of
my enjoyment.
