Material things can be seen and touched. One cannot see an emotion. If one sees a person crying, they see the result of the emotion, not the emotion itself, since people shed tears for a variety of reasons such as sorrow or joy. Even if the person related that they were crying for joy, that still does not acurately describe what the person is feeling.
I do not feel the statement is misleading or ambiguous, and if you can explain why you feel this way, I will be better equipped to respond to your question. Since you disagree with my statement, maybe you can explain to me why you feel emotions are material, if that indeed is the case? Do you consider ideas, imagination, fantasy, hope as being material as well?
