Good to hear that you're on the way back to functionality, Allan. Pain is a weird thing - it's very subjective. Pain-management experts suggest working with diaries and grading things on scales from one to ten. Professionally, I haven't found them particularly helpful. Many doctors don't take pain seriously, especially when they've caused it themselves! In terms of acute pain, like the post-op healing situation you're in, where it's clear that it is a temporary phenomenon, one of the commonest mistakes is to give insufficient analgesics. If you have to take opioids, then it's crazy not to take enough to get rid of the pain. In a professionally managed environment, you're not going to turn into a junkie in a week - although many physicians seem to inordinately afraid of this (while frequently dispensing prescriptions for sleeping-pills as if they were smarties).
There also needs to be a lot more work done on possible potentizing effects of anticholinergic substances such as amitriptyline or most neuroleptics in low doses on the efficacy of analgetics, thus allowing lower dosages of opioids.
