I had a hip replacement with an epidural five years ago. It was a very
weird experience - firstly being awake while your leg ist taken out of
the socket and then hearing all that hammering, chiselling and
drilling going on. They'd initially sedated me, but I wasn't out.

Post-op, as a result of the analgesic cocktail they were pumping
straight into my lumbal fluid I was high as a kite - but I felt really
great. I phoned a colleague/friend of mine two hours after the
operation. She told me later I'd talked for an hour non-stop.
Sometimes - only sometimes - your health insurance will actually pay
for getting you stoned ...:-)
