We might say the same of anyone Allan - I'm thinking immediately of
students - often much better on their own than in class! Robert Fitch
(NYU) said we have an unhealthy fixation on issues like feminism,
racism and sexual orientation that relegates ordinary truthfulness to
a secondary role. The generosity of black guys and their families
towards me through cricket was wonderful. Many of the problems seem
unaddressed - my sense of it is we are always working with a set of
diplomatic manners that conceal the basic issues. The answer always
seems to be 'education' when it ought to be working together.
'Deep cover' is an interesting thought, one I'm trying to create a
novel around. Foreign policy seems a classic example, less in
'spying' and more in its actions in the open under constant denial.
In a sense, I regard my life as one in deep cover as an innocent
abroad.
