Meister Eckhart said that he who is free is freedom itself. http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/meister-eckhart/
"What is key is that by freedom Eckhart understands nothing other than self-consciousness or the I." "The ground of the soul in the absolute one is its own goal because self-consciousness is nothing other than one and the one, because freedom is nothing other than one and the one, because moral responsibility for oneself and others—Eckhart speaks of justice—is nothing other than one and the one. Self-consciousness, freedom and justice are always and everywhere only themselves, having nothing ‘outside’ of, additional or foreign to them." No, I don't understand all that, either! But it's interesting, and deep, like Plato and Sartre. On Jan 18, 5:32 pm, Lee <[email protected]> wrote: > Do we really choose to have faith in God's existance though? Rather like one's sexual preferance, is it true that one > can choose to belive in God or not? I'm inclined to think that belief in God is the same as belief in oneself. Belief in God is absurd, but so is belief in oneself. Equally, disbelief in oneself is absurd, and so is disbelief in God. We are all absurd. (Chorus: "You certainly are, Twirlip, old mate!") It may be absurd to choose to believe or disbelieve anything, but it is not absurd to choose between absurdities. I choose the absurdity of belief in myself and belief in God, over the absurdity of disbelief in God and disbelief in myself. I'm sure this can be said in a simpler and less absurd fashion. It embarrasses me, but I believe it. Or I choose to.
