What is cynical about what Slip says? "Appropriately" is the odd one
out in your equation. Just as I don't mean to insult Pat, but still
haven't given up the hope one day that he'll  wake up to reality and
stop frightening his children with his semi-dead/ghost state and
stories. All in the name of his fixed ideas. More fixed than the
bureaucrat's wobbly self-ethos and in that respect more dangerous.
