I spent a year in the late 80s working as a civilian employee for the US Army near Heidelberg after moving to Germany. It was - at times - a very weird experience of two worlds geographically commingled with very few points of contact (unless you looked for them). This included service people and their dependents who had lived here for over a decade without learning any of the language of their host country.
