My father was a marine Corps. officer stationed in German for a time after WWII, and it was one of his fondest memories (he was a pilot in the Pacific arena during the war.) He loved Germany and everything about it while he was there (at least, these are the memories and feelings he conveyed to me.) I still have a small wood carving that he bought while there. I remember playing with it often as a child, and was glad that my mother gave it to me after his passing. Like a touch stone of global unity. I found it warming to know that he was endeared to Germany after the war, in the midst of what historically we know to be much chaos, political maneuvering and misery. I know that the German landscape and people had much to do with opening his heart to the experience. I've always admired his ability to look beyond the war and its aftermath, and allow the most important aspects of Germany to color his experience. In this case, I think communication was an important part of his experience.
