There is also a long tradition of religions assisting the poor and sick, Slip. Our Founders were sick of religious wars in Europe but they could not stop sects from establishing and continuing separation. There were terrible biases against Catholics and Jews. Intermarriage has gone by the wayside since the '60's but often it means there is no religion practiced- i,.e. they are seculars- they celebrate Christmas because they "believe" in Santa Claus, Easter because of the Easter Bunny- so on and so forth.
