Hm. I tried to update a test system to follow your
experiments, but I still get the weird message:

"udev: renamed network interface eth1 to eth2"

and therefore ifup eth1 fails (there is no config for eth2).

lsusb shows the ZyDAS WLA-54L 802.11bg appear or disappear
on echo 1/0 >/proc/jz/wifi-power

Any ideas what the reason for this udev renaming could be?
(there is no active eth1 in ifconfig).
