It can't. The difference is that the jz4740 has an internal boot ROM that
handles all this. The jz4730 doesn't. I.e. it simply starts execution of
code at address 0x0000000 (or similar). This is connected to NAND
flash. If that part of NAND flash is broken, only JTAG remains.

You mean the 4-pin connector near a reset button?
This is a RS232 console interface (needs a adapter).

Unfortunately, if U-Boot is damaged there is *only* JTAG remaining. I hope
that I receive my adapter PCB today so that I can solder the connectors 
and connect it to the Openmoko Debug Board. Then, we will see...
