On the other hand you propose to use gmail; but by using gmail you put
up a barrier so that self hosters cannot write to you.
gmail makes with mails sent from my self hosting server what Apple does
with your provider: put the mail in the spam folder of the recipient in
their accounts.
Self hosters can send to my gmail account: I read from time to time the
spam folder in gmail. The problem you mention is not existent.
But if I send from my server to a gmail account, there is the risk that
the recipient do not see the spam folder and my mail be ignored.
Recommending not to use gmail or applemail is sure a very good thing,
but does not solve the problem, thousands of millions of possible
recipients will still use them.

Another possible alternative would be to open an account on vivaldi.net.
It is free and you get, I think, up to 10 GB of mail storage.
By the way, as a result of this discussion, I resubscribed to the mailing
list from my sdf account.
For some reason, though, I haven't been able to sign onto their OpenBSD
server, beastie.sdf.org, this morning.
