Hey James

Try starting mixxx from the terminal like this:

`pasuspender mixxx'

Does that help? Pulseaudio just gets in the way of Mixxx playing. Which 
sound API are you using? Make sure to try different sound devices that 
show up in your sound configuration in the preferences. After you start 
it with pasuspender, there should be a new option in the list that was 
previously claimed  by Pulseaudio. You should use that one.
