Disclaimer - I may be totally off-base and this could be very left-field: I don't think anything in our audio code has really changed appreciably since 1.6.1. Can someone verify whether this issue occurs with 1.6.1 on Jaunty or not?
I was digging around to find out if any other applications have seen weird "ALSA's playback stream is dying" bugs, and it turns out PulseAudio saw a similar one in both Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04. The bug involves some sort of buckling under high CPU load: https://bugs.launchpad.net/pulseaudio/+bug/237443 The problem is that details are weak on this bug. There's a changelog for a revision which claims it fixes the bug, which includes: " * Last upload, specifically 0091_workaround_alsa_horkage, fixes: LP: #235990, #237443, #279847, #317997, #323185, #330814, LP: #334874." Now, I can't find this 0091_workaround_alsa_horkage patch available anywhere publically on the internet, and the person who posted that (Daniel Chen) was equally vague on IRC when I asked him about it. He basically just said the kernel/ALSA/alsa-lib are borked in 8.10 and 9.04, but failed to give any more details. He said 9.10 should fix these issues (specifically the combination of the kernel/ALSA/alsa-lib). So there's a few things we can try to see if this is really an ALSA issue: 1) Try 1.6.1 on 9.04 and see if the same problem happens (lockup during playback) 2) Try 1.6.1 and latest 1.7.0 on the latest Ubuntu 9.10 alpha, and see if the issue remains. 3) Maybe something else, I'm jetlagged at the moment. Or, the ALSA bug the PulseAudio developers purportedly saw might have nothing to do with our problem, but we should try to figure this out before we release a 1.7.0 final.
