        Units like the Sony's I've used use "MPEG".

        The DSC-H1 Digital CameraspacerDSC-H1 for example uses  
        "MPEG Movie VX Standard/Fine Mode with Audio". 

        I see that that at least one of the Canon cameras uses MJPEG so
        that would work with mjegtools.

        Others use MPEG-4 in a Quicktime container.

        So far it seems that more still cameras use MPEG than MJPEG.

        Since the data in the file was not recognized I think he has a
        camera that records to MPEG rather than MJPEG.  That could be
        why the 'not a supported format - avi)' message appeared.
