OK, I have owned both a GTI and a GLI, and I will tell you, the GLI handles
better(same suspension setup, Eibach and Tokico), and is more stable at
speed. I had my GTI up to 125(indicated) with the stock 1.8L, and I pinned
it at 140 with the 2.1L. If anyone wants to calculate speedo error, the GTI
had a 2Y in it with the 1.8L and a 4K with the 2.1L, and the GLI has a 2Y
trans. The GLI hasn't received it's official high-speed run yet, but I have
had it over 100mph, and it feels solid as a rock.

Anyway, one thing we forgot about the "coast down" is the rolling resistance
of the tires. I'm sure that the GTIIs I had on my GTI had a lot more rolling
resistance than the near-bald P600s I have on the GLI. And that has got to
have a profound effect on the coast down times.

And about all of this big-bumper, small bumper business: I was actually
looking for an early '90 GLI to get the 2.0L -and- the small bumpers. I just
prefer that look. And it makes parking a lot easier. Snow, too. Last year
when it snowed, I took the front spoiler off of the GTI. Not exactly
practical with the GLI(GTX). I am going to need a new front bumper after
this winter(read: $$). And the small bumper 16V spoiler can be had for about
$40. Damn progress...
