Being stock, or even slightly modded, a 1.8L isnt going to be able to reach the rev-limiter in 5th. The peak horsepower at about 6200?? and by the time you are there, or anywhere past there, you are not making enough power to overcome drag. The way my car is geared now, if I remember right, it was at 5500rpm at 130mph in 5th. It was still pulling pretty good, but I had to slow for traffic.

I'm sitting here looking at the Feb, 1991 issue of R&T (The one I'm supposed to be scanning in for you guys, heh!) at the comparison between the GTI 2.0L
16v, the Nissan NX2000, and the honda CRX si. According to their gear
charts, the 2 litre will do 122MPH at 6300RPM. This is with a .91 5th gear
(My '88 has a .89), and a 3.67 final drive (standard). Our 1.8's, with the
extra 1000RPM to play with, should top out a little higher (horsepower
willing, of course!).
