Well, I have tested this with two basically equal cars, but different
seats. My 16V has default Recaros, set on lowest position. OK, its
feels not low enough. I see like a hawk.  Rallye, which is also Golf,
has different, leather seats (a million, btw) which are lower than
Recaros. And I still see like a hawk. And even feel better, because
it somehow feels that Rallye has wider and bigger interior!
Effect of low seats? I like it.
US cars are big, doors are thick, sitting is farther from windows, 
usually thick pillars...   But its also cool to drive like a tank ;-)
