John, I feel for you. Last year, the $1.39 plastic linkage broke on me and the only gear I could find was 3rd. Drove 90 miles w/ 4 adults and a trunkful of hamachi (caught the limit of 10 yellowtails per person :-). Lots of slip and redline almost the whole way on the freeway (about 60mph)...

On my second date with my present girlfriend, on the way to the restaurant my Jetta's shift linkage fell apart. Tranny was stuck in 4th. Not wanting to ruin the date, I said what the heck. I kept driving with LOTS of clutch slippage. I am SO lucky I didn't have to parallel park. She was impressed i didn't give up and call a tow truck. Of course the clutch is now slipping with 130k miles. I'm replacing it this weekend. JohnE 92 Corrado VR6
