You can use the 1.8L rods.
If you use the others, make sure you get them balanced. In fact, spend $100 at a machine shop and have them balance all bottom-end parts. It's worth it for the peice of mind. I also recommend using ARP rod-bolts, ARP main bolts arent really worth it on a VW, since they rarely fail.

Subject: Various engine building questions...
Date: Wed, 09 Feb 2000 21:28:34 -0500

Hi all,
I bought a 2.0l shortblock with 83mm pistons (2008cc) yesterday, and I
have a crank coming in the mail in a few days. So, when I graduate
(May) this engine will be coming together. Until then, I have 4 months
to think, plan, and buy all of the necessary parts I'll be needing to do
this swap in a weekend without a lift. So, over the next few months, I
will be asking some of the craziest engine building questions to the
list, to ensure the swap works out. Here are my first few questions:

1. Is it okay to mix connecting rods when building an engine? I have 3
used rifle drilled 2.0 liter rods, and can get another brand new one for
around $50. OR, I can use 1.8l rods (although they aren't rifle
drilled). What should I do? I don't see why it should matter as the
bearing is what comes in contact with the crank, so wear isn't a factor)

2. The 2.0l crank I sourced was machined, it needs .20 under on the
main bearings and .30 on the rods bearings. After calling Velocity and
TT, I found out that it is possible to get such crazy sized bearings.
But I also just found out that new cranks can be gotten for about $350.
Then I could use standard bearings. Hmmm... That adds up, to almost
$500 just for the crank and bearings. Or, I can have the used machined
crank with big bearings for the $170 I just paid and about another $160
for the bearings. ???? Any good reason why I should spend $500 and go
with new stuff?

3. Obviously I'll be replacing just about every seal I can find, any
other major things to replace while the engine is out of the car? I was
thinking motor mounts, I think my tranny mount may be shot again.
Clutch is pretty new, less than a year old. Any sensors (thermotime,
oil pres, etc) that should be replaced as preventive maintence?

Thanks in advance,
Denis

* Well, there is a 1.8 in there now, and I have a 2.0 in my trunk (I'll
be bringing it home to NJ this weekend).
