I don't have conclusive proof but it makes sense that the automatic is faster, especially with a turbo. This is b/c this allows the turbo to remain pressurized during shifts. When you're running high boost numbers (like my pickup), it makes sense to add a waste gate that dumps into the intake - this way, even with a manual trans, the turbo stays spooled during shifts.
Case in point is my pickup vs my buddy's pickup - his is an earlier model automatic, mine is a later model manual.
