I really wouldn't believe that vw's crappy automatic tranny could make the
1.8T beetle faster than the 5-speed.  Those transmissions shift really
slowly and they're unreliable anyhow.  There isn't enough turbo lag on the
1.8T that you need the auto tranny to keep the turbo spooled.  In my
experience, once you're accelerating hard in the 1.8T, there's no lag
between shifts.  The automatic probably feels a bit faster off the line in
normal driving (most automatics do) but in the end, the 5-speed is probably
faster around a track (or straight down one).

FWIW, in our fleet of 40ish new VW's, we've had to do three transmissions.
None of those cars have over 20K miles on them.  So far (knock on wood) the
20 civics have had no such problem.
