No, I have not taken the base of the fuba apart yet.  I just
looked at the inside of the base a saw that the power wire
running with the antenna cable was cut and taped up.  I just
assumed it to be bad.  I will check it out though.  
The reception with my new alpine is very good.  I can get
stations from Rochester and I am in Syracuse, NY.  I still need
to check AM reception.  It was the cheapest cd alpine from
Crutchfield, $159.  I like it a lot.  My goal was to have a
stereo that was clear and crisp when I am driving at 100 mph
(only when no one else is around), with all the windows down and
the sunroof open.  I have met my goals, but could use a little
more base.  Ah well.
