Because hitting the end of the tierod with a hammer mushrooms the end with
the threads. This renders the threads useless. I want to reuse the tierods.

Cost of the tool is approximately $35
Cost of a tierod end is approximaately $65 each.

Why spend extra money?  Hit the knuckle with a small sledgehammer where teh
tierod end goes through it.  I promise you it will pop out.
