speaking of swapping steering racks...

can anyone confirm that the steering column is a different length for the
power rack than it is for the manual one??

I was bolting in a manual rack in my former power rack-ed car and the column
u joint will not reach the splined shaft on the rack. 
it misses it by about 1/8" making it about 3/4" or so too short. yanking on
the column thinking that it was puched in seemed to do nithing. and yes the
rack is mounted to the subframe correctly. ;)

In the distant past I purchased the same VW puller  as shown in Bentely 
from JC Whitney for $15. Also available from SnapOn man for big bux. Worth 
every penny. Maks task trivial.  Similar can be borrowed from Kragen.
