I also have a horrible problem, it takes a full 5 seconds of cranking over the 
engine
before the it finally fires up. This is usually at anytime that I try and start 
it.

My '88 GLI (CIS-E Jetronic) has an issue with what seems like low fuel
pressure at startup. For the first few seconds, it sputters, then it
catches up and all is good. It also does it the first time I put it under
load, but from there on out, it runs like a dream. In-tank fuel pump is
new, accumulator is new, and the fuel filter is new. Any thoughts?
