Anth, I know your pain.
I'm probably the only other guy on the list who has had the same problem.
The fan on the alt does not do too much besides, maybe slightly cooling the
alternator. If its cold where you are you may be able to postpone getting a
new alt until spring.
I'd think that maybe the alt belt may have been over-tensioned, which can
also cause bearings to wear prematurely.

If I were you I wouldn't take any chances using the same alt, and buy
another 16V alternator.
Also, check to see if your belts were nicked or graded pieces of the fan.
