Call your local VW dealer and have them run the VIN to see if it is covered
under the recall. Expect some attitude from them, but be civil as they may be
the dealership to replace it for free. A VW dealership will have to diagnose
it as the heater core before VWoA will authorize the free replacement
including the labor. Once the dealer diagnoses it as a faulty heater core,
the dealer will seek VWoA approval to have it covered or not. If the dealer
gives you any lip, call VWoA yourself. IT WILL BE COVERED. Again, be civil,
despite the grief both the dealer and VWoA will give you. I would also
suggest that you do some research and find out which of your local dealers
have good customer service and better yet, good quality techs. I have heard
some horror stories at shady workmanship when it came to pulling the dash
out. I took mine to a dealer about 50 miles away for the best of both worlds.
They somehow replaced mine just by pulling the console out.

I went through all this in December. Let me know if you have any questions.
