I was able to replace the heater core in my 91 Jetta
GLI in 6 hours using the attached instructions.  These
are the instructions given to dealers for replacing
recalled heater cores.  Definitely a pain in the ass
the first go at it.  Now I can probably do it in half
the time now that I know all the places the heater box
gets caught up when you try to pull out the f-ing
thing.
