Hi 16Vs, An update on my troubleshooting. To recap, the car left me on the highway and will not turn over. It will crank normally but will not start. Today I changed the cap, rotor, plugs and ignition coil. I also checked the timing belt and all the teeth look normal and it seems to be turning normally. We found no spark on the plugs which is why we decided to change the ignition coil. I think the next step is to check the distributor more closely. What are some basic tests of the distributor? Also, any chance that it is a fuel problem and not an ignition problem? Would a fuel problem prevent the car from starting at all? Any other suggestions would be appreciated. thanks, Larry 91 GTI 16V - Currently out of commission.

Ive never seen a broken belted motor turn over at normal speed. Good luck and keep us posted. If it isn't the distributor and/or cap/rotor, then we'll go from there.. But right now, that's where I'd place my money..
