Check the Hall sender on the side of the distributor. You do have a Bently manual and a multi meter right? If not get both.
Good luck Hi 16Vs, An update on my troubleshooting. To recap, the car left me on the highway and will not turn over. It will crank normally but will not start. Today I changed the cap, rotor, plugs and ignition coil. I also checked the timing belt and all the teeth look normal and it seems to be turning normally. We found no spark on the plugs which is why we decided to change the ignition coil. I think the next step is to check the distributor more closely. What are some basic tests of the distributor? Also, any chance that it is a fuel problem and not an ignition problem? Would a fuel problem prevent the car from starting at all?
