If the motor is in decent condition (good compression, no water in oil/oil in water), $175 is a good deal. The 16V Passat's have 02A tranny's, which use a hydraulic clutch. The motor should bolt right up to the 020 in a GTI/GLI, so the clutch is a non issue. The big question is what motor does the recipient car have in it now? If it's a 1.8 CIS-E 16V, you'll need to use the injectors and distributor from that motor on the 2.0, which should make it a drop in. Or you could convert to Motronic, which would mean getting the fuel distributor, ignition distributor, ECU, wiring harness, various sensors, evaporative emissions solenoids, and if you need to pass emissions hardware inspection, the vacuum amplifier, throttle body boot, various vacuum lines, and probably some other stuff I can't think of right now, from the Passat, as well as the motor itself. If the recipient car is an 8V Digifant or CIS car, you will have to convert to either full Motronic or 1.8 16V CIS-E injection and ignition. Of course you could always go stand alone, like MegaSquirt, SDS, TECII or III, etc., as long as you don't have to pass emissions.

I recently found a good 2.0 16V in a Passat. Looks just like the GTi's
They're asking $175. Is this a good deal? I noticed a hydraulic clutch, how
much modification would I need to get in a Gti?
It'd make a great winter project.

PS I have a 2.0 16V (I ran it w/out oil) that's just taking up space, I thought it'd be worth it to have rebuilt. I now think not. What if anything
should I strip off it before selling it for scrap?
