Hey Les,
Yeah, it's been a little slow on the old list lately. How much power
do you anticipate putting
down with the new motor? If you're going with the stock 134 bhp, or
a little more (no more than
around 150-160 bhp), I'd start with a 2Y, which will give you the
larger input shaft (requires a 16V
clutch disk), the 100mm drive flanges, and close ratio gears with a .
91 5th gear, and a 3.67 final drive.
Then I'd get a 3.94 R&P, and try and find a .80 5th gear (Autotech
used to sell them). That will make the
car amazingly quick through the first four gears, and the .8 5th will
make freeway driving tolerable. For the
limited slip, I'd go with a Quaife (Peloquin's are supposed to be ok,
but I have no experience with them,
personally). Then, if you are pulling the gearbox apart to install
the 5th gear (that can be done with the
box in the car, if need be), R&P, and Quaife, I'd get new synchros,
bearings, dogs and clips, seals, gaskets,
and replace any damaged gears and synchro hubs, and while the whole
thing was apart, send it to Cryo
Science and have everything including the cases, R&P, Quaife, and the
flywheel/pressure plate cryogenically
treated. That will strengthen everything some, and help the gearbox
to last longer. Now, if you're going big
on power (forced induction, or?), the 020 has to go. I'd try and
find an 02M six speed, or get a converted 02A
6 speed from Euro Spec Sport (http://www.eurospecsport.com/). Euro
Spec sells complete kits to convert a MkII from
an 020 to an 02A. The 020 is just too weak by design to handle much
more than the stock 9A horse power.

Since there hasnt been any activity I thought I would see if I
could get
some advice and maybe awaken the list.
Some of you know, I've been converting my MKII Golf to the
equivalent of a
90-92 GTi 16V. My original machine came with the 1.8l low
compression with
the 5speed ACN transmission. This transmission had nice tall gears for
freeway cruising but was not known to be robust and has the smaller
90mm
axle flanges.
My goal is to build a nice 5sp with a tall 5th gear for freeway
cruising.
I'd also like to install a Limited Slip Differential.
What transmissions would you recommend? Which cars possessed the
recommended
transmission?
Thanks in advance
