Les,

Holland has quite a bit more experience with VWs but
I'll chime in that I'm not sold on the 2Y (16v)
gearbox. Yes, the input shaft is larger but I don't
recall hearing of anyone grenading an input shaft on a
VW - grenading differentials, yes; input shafts, no.

It would probably be more cost effective to source a
4K transaxle from an A1 GTi which already has the 3.94
final drive - be careful that the case is
"convertible" between the A1 and A2 chassis. Look for
thru-holes in the differential housing where the A2
transmission mount attaches. The CV joint flanges are
interchangable and you can slip on a set of 100 mm
flanges with minimal effort.

Like Holland, I have no experience with Peloquin other
than the hearsay that "Dude, Peloquin rocks b/c it
hooks up smoother than a Quaife but I've never driven
either, yo". However I have about 10 years of
experience with a Quaife and find it to be a very
worthwhile investment.

Lastly, a 5th gear swap is a MUST HAVE if you intend
to use the car for anything other than in-town
commuting. Depending on your engine selection, you
may want to go with an even taller 5th gear such as a
.75 instead of the .80. I had a .75 5th gear in my
2.0L Slorocco with a 4K box - at 70 mph, the rpms were
around 3000 which beats 3800 in stock configuration.
