I had a similar experience when lifting the car once. While suspended, I could push up on the front wheels without compressing the suspension. I converted one of my cars to VR6 strut bearings but have not yet driven it on the street. It is expensive to convert. I'm told the replacement VR6 bearings aren't too bad. It's the VR6 conversion parts that are expensive. Since you already have those, it should not be too costly.
When mine were originally stock, I kept replacing them every few years. It was getting expensive NOT to convert to VR6. Ill be interested to know if the VR6 strut bearings actually translates into a longer service life. -Les -----Original Message----- >From: Matthew Yip <[email protected]> >Sent: Jul 22, 2010 6:01 AM >To: [email protected] >Subject: [a2-16v-list] Upper Strut Mounts > >Had to rotate tyres and bleed the brakes on the street car (89 GTi 16v) - >something about leaving the keys in the car at a PDX and seeing your car >running >around the track that requires this effort afterwards...<G>. > >When I pulled off the wheels to bleed the brakes, I pulled on the RF strut >(Bilstein Sport shock, Neuspeed race spring, R32 rear and OE front control arm >bushings) and it MOVED at the top by the upper strut mount.
