I did narrow the sound down to the drive side. When I brake I can hear a cluck and then again when I take off from a stop I hear it. Happens at each stop/go now.
I did order a pass side axle since I could hear a recurring solid sounding click under slight braking load while car was on stands. I was thinking of replacing the strut mount when I replace the axle. The paperwork from my shine suspension (dated 2002) indicated that 90 passat strut bearings were provided. I noticed on http://www.germanautoparts.com that the passat mounts run a couple dollars higher than the standard 16v jetta units. I see the vr6 conversion option too but that is $170 as opposed to $25 for stock. I'll probably just order the passat mounts since I know they worked ok. I'm not expecting these to be as good as the vr6 mounts but they did last me 10 years and 50k miles. I am not confident they have quit on me yet, but I am really bothered by this clunk I haven't been able to pinpoint. Replacing the axle and the mount at the same time doesn't add much work.
