Most of the folks I see buying Mk2s are twenty-somethings which is interesting
unto itself.  The folks in their 40s and 50s are buying BMWs and Porsches, not
VWs, because they tend to be looking for the status-car of their youth rather
than their first car or the car of their parents.
The Mk3 isn't popular b/c it's both a very overweight Mk2 AND it was a
transition period for VW that resulted in lack-luster styling and extremely
poor reliability.  The Mk4 is very popular but it's still a relatively new car
whose propensity for illuminating the CEL has created it's own subculture.

{}#yiv5456615054 I think it is related to the age of the buyers.  Many of the
people who love these cars were in their teens when they came out.  Now they
are in their 30s, 40s and 50s and have money to spend on the car they could not
have as a youngster.    This is what is driving the BMW E30,  Aircooled Porsche
911, Ferrari Testarrosa and Lambo Countach markets to go sky high.   Few people
lusted after MK3s and MK4s.  They were popular when new but did not age well.
Did not have the nostalgia these others had.  Maybe because they were not as
impactful.  The MK2 was way better than the MK1 (whose values are also
climbing) but the MK3 and MK4 were just incremental improvements which while
they were much better cars overall – people don’t lust over incremental.
Just some thoughts on what I think is driving the market.   40 year olds in the
80s were buying 50s - 70s cars and that fueled that market.   The same is
happening now – except the 40 year olds are buying 80s cars..  By the time the
MK4s came out,  most of these same people were into adulthood and the cars that
came out then did not imprint in their memory as much as when they were teens.

Subject: Re: [mk2-16v] MK2 Jetta on Bring A Trailer (9/2016)    To further
Matthew’s observation, I’ve noticed that MK2 resale values are markedly higher
when compared to similar condition MKIIIs or MKIVs. I was surprised at how
inexpensive MKIIIs are selling for these days. They’re practically worthless.
I’ve seen two 95 Golf hatchbacks with the six cylinder VR6 motor this week
which appeared in decent condition for around $750    -Les

maybe these cars are finally gaining some recognition in the collector market
even though they were mass-produced.  This example is very clean especially
since most diesels were beat to pieces by their owners who saw them (correctly)
as work-horses rather than collectibles.      What's amusing are the younger
generation who flock to Mk2s because they accept power upgrades more readily
than the Mk1.  To read some of their exploits, it's as if they discovered the
New World and to their shock and dismay, the Mk2 isn't a Honduh or a Toyota but
instead, it's an old German car that's filled with idiosyncrasies and
maintenance nightmares.      On Wednesday, September 14, 2016 9:41 AM, Larry
