Hello List,

Thanks for the replies.

I'm sure selecting a custom installation of Linux, or compiling the binaries
yourself is the best option if you want the best Linux system, the thing is
that I find even the simplest task difficult on Linux, so for me to compile
a kernel would be like asking an overweight 120 year old woman to do 5
consecutive summersaults.

Let's say I wipe my hard drive and install Red Hat 9, and then NEVER update
it until a new version of the distro comes out. Would it be useable then?

Keith

P.S: I REALLY think there should be a standardized installer for Linux,
like the Windows Installer in Windowz. Would it be so hard to create a
similar program for Linux? We went on the moon, surely this is possible!

Hello Keith,

Ufortunatelly, it seems for RedHat that selecting anything elese but Custom
installation will allow you later to do nothing with your system.
As such, I would highly recommend you wipe out your Linux and select a
Custom installation (you can select for installation only what you would
need); as regards the kernel update, I would suggest to better download the
kernel from the Internet (sources) and compile it yourself. You can in this
way to optimize it accordingly to your system's hardware and your needs.
As a general rule, the best installation is made starting from sources. Yes,

it is true that it's not so easy, but is flexible!

Best regards & good luck

Valentin
