If it is a tar.gz (bz2) type file, do not forget after uncompress-it to read the following files: README and INSTALL. Their content can be helpfull and will provide you a lot of info about dependencies and ways to do the installation. If there are rpm files, for sure there is a Package Manager which will allow you to check the content of the file and will do the installation @ a click of a button.
