Hello James, I tried compiz :) played around and enjoyed. But practically it slows down my working place, so I switched back to normal desktop (kde or xfce4) at work and home. Same on my laptop, I need efficient performance, not 3D tools. Personally I prefer desktop environment to text console. But latest was a good start about 10 years ago, and still remains on the servers. Most popular programs I use: kontact, konsole, vim, kate, make, gaim and firefox/epiphany.
