Yesterday I tried a clean 10.04 installation and had some odd results.
The installation was easy and smooth. The sound varied with the media player used. Totem's volume was loud but started with a few clicks before getting going, but with Mplayer & SMplayer the volume was low. VLC was the same as Totem. To get video and sound in Firefox, Abode flash was the only plugin that worked, the opensource ones didn't work. At first I installed the Abode flash plugin and it didn't work as it was the 32bit version, then I removed it and installed the 64bit version which then did work fine. What I did find most odd was that any programme installation went _very_ slow, it would work a little faster using the command line but still was very slow. Of course my Canon printer didn't work as 'libcupsys2' has been replaced by 'libcups2' and it not easy to add libcupsys2. The HP laser printer worked OK as it was in the default list with I think has been taken verbatim from Linux org. I did changed the Theme and back-grounds with no problem. The graphic default driver for 3D graphics was on old version. The boot up was no faster than my Customized 9.04. I got the general impression that 10.04 is going commercial and chasing the Windows user. It looks nice and generally works out of the box but it is not easy to change things if you don't want the plan vanilla version. I now fully understand now. why some guys are switch to other distros with better tweaking abilities. So I zapped it off my HD partition and installed my customized 9.04 again, which has: Kernel 2.6.33, Nvidia driver 64-195.36.24, Firefox 3.6.5 OpenOffice 3.2 (build 9483) and All my other programs which are the latest versions.(done Manually). I am now a happy Penguin with a faster all round operating system. As my benchmarks show. Paul Anton Xuereb wrote: > Powerpill ftw :p > > only 2 problems persist.
