3 days is a long time - comparable to registering domains in non-mainstream TLDs. The main problem with Malta's NIC is that they insist on verifying identity via a manual signatures - this is arguably more secure and results in fewer complaints, but takes longer to setup. By what standards? Other NICs have automatic on-line processing systems. What's up with Malta's NIC? They also seem to not comply with standards and are not running a WHOIS service.
