Jeremy,

Thank you for your enthusiastic and prompt reply.

The 1 terrabyte disk on which I plan the installation got a yum/rpm corruption.
I was using it as a test system.  The system I want to use to install Debian
has a dual core Intel MB,  a d9300CPU, and 3 gigs of memory with 2 Satas.  One
Sata has my CENTOS system, the other drive is the one I plan to use.

I will download and burn the ISO image for the AMD version
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.7/amd64/iso-cd/debian-507-amd64-netinst.iso
 for amd64.

No negative feedback from me will mean good news.

In my opinion the best way to install it is to use the minimal image. This
fetches the files you need from the network, ensuring you have the latest
versions. You will have to do a large upgrade if you use the DVDs anyways.

The classic debian installer is text based (ncurses, it is very simple and
clear to use). You can get the graphical installer on the minimal image too if
I remember right, it asks what you want when you boot.

Minimal image is at http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ or
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.7/i386/iso-cd/debian-507-i386-netinst.iso
 for 386 and
http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.7/amd64/iso-cd/debian-507-amd64-netinst.iso
 for amd64.

Debian uses grub by default, but lilo is also an option during install.
Everything you need is either on the CDs or will be fetched during installation.

Why not install it into a virtualbox image the first time so you aren't messing
with your system. It takes only a few minutes to go through the install
process, and you can feel safe knowing what it will do when you do a real
install.
