It goes against the 'proper' network design philosophy which separates router vs service boxes, but for home network/small network, low volume, asterisk on a router is a fine idea. If you're paranoid (which you should be) you just run it in a VM and router appropriate ports to the VM (that's how I do it). That's assuming you don't have some weird hardware config, in which case it should be on its own box anyway.
